Matthew 26:31-35, 69-75
Jesus and His disciples had just had what we know as the Last Supper. This takes place just before Jesus went to pray in the garden of Gethsemane.
Jesus warned Peter he would deny Him. When Jesus first met Peter, He simply said, “follow me.” Peter dropped everything to follow Christ. Peter was the one who tried walking on the water to Jesus. He was the one who cut off the soldier’s ear when they were arresting Jesus.
Luke 22:31-33
Peter said, “I’ll never deny you, Lord. They can throw me in prison or even put me to death.” Just moments before as they ate together, Jesus warned that someone would betray Him. They all responded, “Is it I?”
Matthew 26:20-22
They all worried that it would be them, but now Peter said, “I’ll never deny/offend you, Lord.” Peter started trusting himself.
Do you know who is immune to messing up, sinning, backsliding? It isn’t any of us. Have you ever heard someone gossiping about someone else who messed up? “Can you believe they did this or that? I’d never do that!” The reality is, you might do worse.
